Stealth Lose To Portland, 15-8

SAN JOSE - The San Jose Stealth outscored the Portland Lumberjax, 7-3, in the first and third quarters.
However, Portland dominated the second and fourth frames, 12-1. The end result: the Lumberjax (2-1) defeated the Stealth (2-3), 15-8, before 5,457 at HP Pavilion at San Jose.
The Stealth got the first two goals of the game as Darren Resig scored his first goal of the season at 3:58 on assists by Curtis Hodgson and Eric Martin. The second score came nearly three minutes later at 6:51 as Cam Sedgwick picked up his fourth on the power play. The Jax ended the first quarter scoring as Ryan Sharp scored the first of his two goals at 7:39.
San Jose opened the second quarter scoring on Ryan Boyle's power play goal at 1:19 to give the Stealth a 3-1 lead. But then Portland took over by scoring the next six goals of the first half. Portland tied the game at 7:18 on Mike Hominuck's power play goal and took the lead for good 15 seconds later on Richard Morgan's goal. The Jax went into halftime with a 7-3 lead.
The Stealth started the third quarter scoring as Boyle scored his second goal of the game, from assists by Gary Rosyski and Sedgwick, at 2:09. But Portland picked up goals from Hominuck at 4:52 and Peter Morgan at 9:56 to give them a 9-4 lead.
San Jose started a mini-rally by scoring four goals within a three-and-a-half minute time span. The first came from Jeff Zywicki on the power play at 10:06. Derek Malawsky followed at 11 minutes and his brother, Curt, scored at 11:51. Zywicki's second goal at 13:37 cut Portland's lead to 9-8 entering the fourth quarter.
But the Jax dominated the final quarter by outscoring San Jose, 6-0. Six different Portland players scored the goals. The most bizarre tally came at 12:04. San Jose pulled goaltender Anthony Cosmo as they were attacking in the Portland end. Rosyski fired a shot on goal that caromed off the cross bar, hit Portland's Del Halladay down field and bounced into the empty net.
Sedgwick led the Stealth scoring with six points on a goal and a team season-high five assists. Zywicki and Boyle had two goals apiece. Derek Malawsky and Rosyski had three assists each. Peter Morgan had three goals to pace Portland, while Luke Forget, Powell and Hominuck had three assists each.
Portland scored their 15 goals off 37 shots on starter Brandon Miller and Cosmo, who relieved Miller at the start of the third quarter. San Jose had 41 shots on Dallas Eliuk.
The Stealth was 3-for-10 on the power play, while the Lumberjax converted on four of their five opportunities.
RADAR BLIPS: The 15 goals surrendered by San Jose was most allowed this season. The Stealth had allowed 10 goals twice (Jan. 6 at Edmonton and Jan. 14 vs. Colorado). San Jose has scored in double digits just twice in their five games...The eight goals was the second fewest scored by the Stealth in 2006. The season low is seven, which was done twice (Jan. 6 at Colorado and Jan. 21 vs. Philadelphia)...Sedgwick's five assists is one shy of the San Jose individual game record...Tonight's game was the first time San Jose had faced the Lumberjax, one of two National Lacrosse League expansion clubs...The Stealth went 1-2 on their three-game homestand...San Jose plays its next two games on the road (Feb. 11 at Colorado and Feb. 18 in Rochester). They return home March 11 to face the expansion Edmonton Rush at 7:30 p.m.
