
Stealth edges Blaze

The Houston Stealth defeated the Chicago Blaze 98-92 in a fast-paced, up-tempo, high-scoring game Thursday night at Rice University's Autry Court.
Houston's Octavia Blue scored a game-high 26 points. Three of her teammates also scored in double-figures: Kelley Gibson scored 22; Tamicha Jackson scored 18; and center Kym Hope (Miami '99) scored 20 points. Kym replaced Tina Thompson in the starting line-up and she connected on 10 of 14 free throws and 5 of her 6 field goal attempts.
Houston led 46-40 at halftime. Chicago also placed four players in double-figures: Jamie Redd scored 19; Tugba Palazoglu added 16; Ilisha Jarrett scored 11 and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds; and Kina Brown scored 11. The Blaze won the battle of the boards 45 to 37; but, the Stealth shot 50.7% (35 for 69) to 43.8% (32 for 73) for the Blaze.
With the win, Houston (5-3) breaks a four-way tie for first place in the National Women's Basketball League (NWBL) standings. Chicago's record falls to 4-4.
The Stealth's next home game is Sunday, February 15, at 1 pm versus the Springfield Spirit.
Individual game tickets are on sale on the Internet at http://www.nwbl.com/stealth/tickets or at the Rice ticket office an hour before the game. Tickets are $15 for reserved, priority seating, $12 for reserved seating, $8 for adult general admission and $5 for child general admission.
The NWBL is a six-team league that features 27 active WNBA players. The NWBL is in its fourth season with six teams expanding the United States: the Birmingham Power (Birmingham, AL), the Chicago Blaze (Chicago, IL), the Colorado Chill (Ft. Collins, CO), the Dallas Fury (Dallas, TX), the Houston Stealth (Houston, TX), and the Springfield Spirit (Springfield, MA). The season runs through March 23. A four-team, single-elimination playoff begins on April 1, 2004.
