
Houston Stealth slips past Birmingham Power

Thanks to increased intensity, the Houston Stealth returned to its winning ways at home Sunday afternoon 84 to 78 over the Birmingham Power. Kym Hope continued her outstanding play for the Stealth with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Three other Stealth players scored in double figuresAlicia Thompson scored 16 points and grabbed game-high 11 rebounds; Octavia Blue scored 15; and Tai Dillard added 11. Tiffani Johnson came off the bench and grabbed 9 boards.
Birmingham's Alisa Burras was the game's leading scorer with 28 points as she used her size to her advantage to dominate the paint. Forward Amanda Cleveland scored 12 while Jaynetta Saunders and Jen Surlas each added 10 points.
The Stealth led 75 to 60 with 4:45 remaining in the game before the Power made one final push. Burras scored eight points during an 18 to 4 run which trimmed Houston's lead to 78-74 with 1:09 remaining. However, free throws by Tai Dillard and Alicia Thompson boosted the Stealth's lead to 8 and the Stealth cruised to victory in the final 41 seconds.
Houston shot 46.3% (31 for 67) from the field while the Power hit 38.8% (31 for 80). Houston attempted 30 free throws compared to 11 for Birmingham.
The Stealth (8-5) led the Power (5-7) 34 to 31 at halftime.
The Stealth will continue its six game homestand Saturday, March 6th, at Autry Court versus the Chicago Blaze. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm.
The Stealth, the two-time defending National Women's Basketball League (NWBL) Champion, plays its home games at Rice University's Autry Court. Individual game tickets are on sale on the Internet at http://www.nwbl.com/stealth/tickets or at the Rice ticket office an hour before the game. Tickets are $15 for reserved, priority seating, $12 for reserved seating, $8 for adult general admission and $5 for child general admission.
The NWBL is a six-team league that features 27 active WNBA players. The NWBL is in its fourth season with six teams expanding the United States: the Birmingham Power (Birmingham, AL), the Chicago Blaze (Chicago, IL), the Colorado Chill (Ft. Collins, CO), the Dallas Fury (Dallas, TX), the Houston Stealth (Houston, TX), and the Springfield Spirit (Springfield, MA). The season runs through March 23. A four-team, single-elimination playoff begins on April 1, 2004.
