Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MUSKEGON, MI.--- Having recently completed one of their more successful work weeks of the current 2008-09 season, the third place Muskegon Lumberjacks are reaping more major benefits from their collective on-ice prowess.
Composing an undefeated week of earning 7 of a possible 8-points through an unblemished mark of 4(3-0-1), the Lumberjacks, in conjunction with the International Hockey League, have announced that forward LUKE STAUFFACHER has been honored as this week's PEPSI / IHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK for the week of March 16th through March 22nd.
STAUFFACHER, 28, enjoyed yet another masterful week in which he combined some extraordinary touch-in-the-clutch goal-scoring with impeccable defensive play and performance. The American-bred from Madison, Wisconsin also bedazzled with his ability for versatility and improvisation. Normally an antagonistic and high-scoring right wing, the diminutive but dynamic 5-8 170lb former U. of Minnesota-Duluth standout was rushed-in to fill the considerable vacuum left at the key center position when the league's leading scorer, Todd Robinson was felled with an injury. In his first season in Muskegon, the 5-year pro stepped-in and filled the breech brilliantly, registering 6-points in 4-games on 4-goals, 2-assists with 13-SOG, 10-PIM and a stellar +5 rating.
Launching his 4-games' week with a crisp defensive effort, warranting a sharp +2 rating and 4-SOG, Stauffacher was at the top of his all-around game Tuesday night, March 17th in Kalamazoo as his 'Jacks ambushed the Wings, 7-4. The next two nights, the former 42-goal cannoneer of the Quad City Mallards stole the show with his offensive flair every-where as he notched a pair of goals in a 3-points masterpiece Friday night in a 5-0 dismissal from Walker Arena of the Flint Generals. "Cool Hand Luke Little" fired the game's FG which was also the GWG before adding an electrifying SHG in being hailed the game's #2 Star, carding a superb +3 rating. The following night, Saturday night, he did it even better as he accounted for both of his team's goals, both GTG in the Lumberjacks dramatic and suspenseful come-from-behind 3-2 OTSO conquest of league-leading Port Huron. Stauffacher was named the "Star of the Game" in that one. He capped his player of the week act with one assist and 3-SOG Sunday in a 'Jacks return engagement at Kalamazoo, resulting in a 5-4 OTSO and one more treasured point in the standings for Muskegon.
In his last 11-games, Stauffacher has been the artisan of 10-goals while adding 4-assists for 14-total points. For the composite campaign, he ranks 10th among the IHL's top scoring elite with 65-points in 59-games on 35-goals and 30-assists. His 35-goals lead the Lumberjacks and rank as third most in the league.
Stauffacher leads the IHL in 3-goal "hat tricks" with 4 and in multiple goal games with 11. His .202 SPCT; 35/173 ranks circuit second and his team high 6-GWG tie him for the runner-up spot in the IHL.
This is the third time thus far this season that Stauffacher has been acclaimed the Pepsi / IHL Player of the Week.
