Staten Island Yankees News Release

The Staten Island Yankees are pleased to announce that Tom Slater will be leading the club during the 2011 season. Slater, most recently the Manager of the Gulf Coast Yankees, will be entering his third season as a member of the Yankees organization. His coaching career began as the Assistant Coach of the Auburn Tigers. Later, he served as Head Coach, for three seasons, at his alma mater, Virginia Military Institute. Prior to joining the Yankees organization, Slater returned to Auburn for four seasons as Head Coach.

"I'm really excited to come to Staten Island. I've heard nothing but great things about the staff, the ballpark, the fans, and Staten Island. Rob Thompson, Pat McMahon and Ty Hawkins have told me how great it is to play baseball in Staten Island, in such a spectacular ballpark." -Tom Slater Manager, Staten Island Yankees

Staten Island Yankees fans will see some familiar faces this season, as Ty Hawkins returns for his sixth season as Batting Coach and Danny Borrell will make his return to the Baby Bombers for the first time since his playing days in 2000. Borrell, serving as the new pitching coach, will look to rekindle his success with the Staten Island Yankees, in search of the team's sixth New York-Penn League Championship.

Rounding out the field staff this season will be Coach Danilo Valiente, who served alongside Tom Slater with the GCL Yankees, and Trainer Jorge Vargas.

"To have someone the caliber of a Tom Slater leading the team is a real asset. His background, track record, and accomplishments speak for themselves. We couldn't be happier with the addition of Tom and his entire staff, and are looking forward to working toward another New York-Penn League Championship."

-Jane Rogers Executive VP, General Manager, Staten Island Yankees
