Orlando Mayhem News Release

ORLANDO -- Unable to capitalize on their first half-scoring opportunities or generate any offense in the second, the Orlando Starz fell in their 2003 IWFL season opener to the Tampa Bay Terminators in front of an estimated crowd of 1,000 Saturday evening at Jones High School.

Terminator half back Sheylia Rutland rushed for 128 yards and scored the game's only touchdown on an 18-yard third quarter run as Tampa Bay took control in the second half.

Elizabeth Wozniak's 26-yard kickoff return gave the Terminators excellent field position at the Starz 32 to begin the third period. Seven plays later, Rutland scored on a fourth-down play to give the visitors a 6-0 lead.

Orlando was held with a first down the final 30 minutes.

The Starz defense did come up with a goal line stance in the fourth quarter when Jana Vanderloop made a fourth-down tackle to give Orlando the ball back. However, Tampa Bay got two points when Ella Coffee tackled Ayesha Jones for a safety with 4:20 to play.

The Starz put together an impressive drive on their second possession. Kahs Sky-Deer connected with Lois-Thompson Daily on a 19-yard completion, and Jones had a 19-yard breakaway as the Starz ended the first quarter with a first and goal on the Tampa Bay one.

However, the drive came up empty-handed when Tampa Bay's Megan Knights stuffed Jones on third and fourth down to end the advance.

Jones led the Starz with 57 yards rushing on 14 carries. Sky Deer had 34 yards passing. Laurie Aversano and Etta Wright led the Orlando defense with nine and eight tackles, respectively.

Orlando travels to Atlanta next Saturday to face the first-year Xplosion at 5 p.m. on the campus of Clark-Atlanta University.
