Huntsville Stars News Release

Huntsville, AL – Huntsville's bats have come alive against West Tenn. The Stars pounded out 10 more hits Sunday after racking up 12 on Saturday night. Huntsville won its third straight over the Diamond Jaxx, 8-4, at Joe Davis Stadium, and the Stars pushed their Southern League West lead to two games over Birmingham pending the Barons' Sunday evening game at Mobile.

For the second straight day, the Jaxx scored twice in the first, only to see Huntsville answer in the home half. Ryan Knox led off with a bunt-single and took second on a single to right by Dave Krynzel, who extended his hitting streak to eight games. J.J. Hardy's ground ball forced out Krynzel at second and moved Knox to third. After Corey Hart lined out, Ryan Gripp delivered a run-scoring single against his old team. Richard Paz followed with a single to plate Hardy for a 2-2 tie.

Huntsville grabbed the lead against Jaxx reliever Jason Szuminski in the fifth. Knox again led off with a hit, a sharp single to center. Knox stole second and Krynzel walked, then Hardy sacrificed them to second and third. Hart received an intentional pass to load the bases, and Gripp rifled a two-run single to center. With Hart at third and Gripp at first, Huntsville pulled off a double-steal, with Hart scoring on the throw through to second. Huntsville stole four bases in the game, bringing their total to 14 steals for the series.

Up 5-3 in the seventh, the Stars sealed the game against reliever Eric Brown. Krynzel ripped his league-leading sixth triple into the rightfield corner. Hardy singled him home and scored one out later on Gripp's double over Ray Sadler's head in dead centerfield. Kade Johnson's two-out, bloop-single plated Gripp for an 8-3 lead. Gripp finished 3-for-4 with four runs batted in, doubling his season RBI total.

Stars lefty Derek Lee (5-2) snapped his two-game losing streak with seven solid frames, permitting three runs on six hits and one walk while fanning four. Szuminski suffered his first loss, surrendering three runs on two hits and two walks over two innings. Matt Childers tossed the final two innings for Huntsville, giving up one run on three hits and two walks.

Huntsville pits righty Mike Jones (5-1, 2.73) against Jaxx right-hander John Webb (0-6, 4.82) in Monday's Memorial Day series finale. Game time is 12:05 p.m. Tickets can be purchased for half-price on-line at www.huntsvillestars.com.
