
Stars Outlast Black Hawks in 8-5 Win

WATERLOO, Iowa - The Lincoln Stars (21-20-1-1) took down the Waterloo Black Hawks (26-14-3-1) in a 8-5 win on Saturday night at Young Arena.
The Stars put the pressure on early with three-unanswered goals. Forward Tristan Ashbrook tipped a shot from the left corner at 6:27 to begin the scoring, 1-0. At 14:07, Stars forward Dominick Mersch slipped home a loose puck in front of the net on the power play to double the lead, 2-0. Mersch found forward Paul Cotter for a breakaway goal at 17:06 while shorthanded, spreading the lead to 3-0. Black Hawks forward Jackson Cates answered back at 18:44 to bring the Black Hawks within two, 3-1.
Early in the second period, Stars forward Josiah Slavin slipped in a rebound at 2:16 to push the lead back to three, 4-1. Cates found his second goal of the night at 11:59 while on the power play, but Cotter also scored his second of the night at 15:20 from the high slot to spread out the lead again to 5-2. Black Hawks forward Ben Copeland converted on a takeaway at 15:47, bringing the lead back to two at 5-3.
Stars forward Casey Dornbach increased the lead, 6-3, with his own tally at 6:57 from the right circle. The Black Hawks came back with two more including a shorthanded goal from Cates at 11:44 and a tally from forward Garrett Wait at 16:49 to come within one, 6-5. Ashbrook netted his second at 18:08 on a backhanded shot off the right post, and Mersch sealed the win at 8-5 with an empty net goal at 19:30.
Stars netminder Tomáš Vomá?ka (15-16-0) stopped 34 of 39 shots in the win. Black Hawks goaltender Jared Moe (15-6-1) halted 10 of 13 shots, while Matej Tomek (11-7-3) turned away 18 of 22 shots in relief during the loss.
