Athletic goalie backstopped Cincinnati to upset series wins in 2003 ECHL Kelly Cup Playoffs; Stars deal Statkus

COLUMBUS, OH – The Columbus Stars placed a big piece of the first-year puzzle as UHL Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Malcolm Cameron and General Manager Robb W. King announced today the signing of Greg Hewitt.

Hewitt recovered from an abdominal injury to dominate two series against regular-season champion Toledo and runner-up Peoria in leading the Cincinnati Cyclones to the Northwest Division championship of the East Coast Hockey League. Hewitt will rejoin Cameron and several other players who were involved in that impressive playoff run.

"We had a great group of guys and some really good chemistry last year," the London, ON native said. "I think it is great that a big group of the guys are coming to Columbus."

Hewitt has a 35-32-16 record in 85 games played through the first two pro seasons of his career. Hewitt's first pro season saw him play almost 3,500 minutes in 57 games for Mobile in the ECHL.

Hewitt's junior experience was with the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Junior Hockey League and he also played a season of Canadian collegiate hockey at St. Thomas University in Fredericton, NB.

"Greg has a tremendous work ethic to complement his extremely athletic and agile style of play," said Cameron about his once and future goaltender. "We expect him to be amongst the league leaders in all goaltending categories again this year."

In addition to Hewitt, other members of Cameron's 2002-2003 Cyclones squad to sign with the Stars include defensemen Ryan Coole and Chad McIver as well as forwards Matt Noga, Matt Medvecz and Evan Cheverie.

STARS DEAL RIGHTS TO DEFENDER BACK TO ROCKFORD: The Stars announced today a deal sending Joe Statkus back to the IceHogs for monetary considerations. The Stars acquired the defenseman as part of a five-player deal that sent Kevin Kerr to Flint, who held Statkus' rights at the end of last season. Stars' forward Lee Jelenic was also a part of that deal.

The Columbus Stars Hockey Family includes the professional United Hockey League Stars, the Junior B Central States Hockey League Stars and the various age groups (Mite through Midget) of the Columbus Stars Youth Travel Hockey Program. The Columbus Stars Ice Center, located just off of Schrock Road on the north side of Columbus will provide a unified location for practices and games. The Center is scheduled to open in early September. Director of Hockey Operations/UHL Head Coach Malcolm Cameron will provide a unifying structure with player development and the joy of the game at its core.
