Traverse City North Stars News Release
BLAINE, MN - Anthony Palumbo is pleased that his Traverse City North Stars came out of the 2008 North American Hockey League Showcase at 3-1, claiming six of eight possible points at the four- day event. It's just that he's a little greedy when it comes to collecting victories.
"We won three of four, but we could have very easily come out of there at 4-0," he said. "What I think we did learn, is that when we play together, we're going to be pretty successful. We saw a lot of good things this week, and we can be even better."
In Saturday's finale - a 4-2 doubling of Fairbanks in suburban Minneapolis - the North Stars used a familiar formula - score first, score more. Phil Wendecker (Westland, MI/TC North Stars) was the icebreaker on Saturday, although Traverse City's lead was short- lived at just 58 seconds, but Jarrod LaBelle (Bay City, MI/TC North Stars) and Kyle Bonis (Lindsay, ONT/TC North Stars) registered back- to-back second period markers to put the Stars ahead by a 3-1 margin. David Johnstone (Grand Ledge, MI/Team nXi AAA) had the lone goal of the third period to seal things up. Johnstone and Bonis each had three goals at the Showcase. C.J. Motte (St. Clair, MI/Honeybaked AAA) made 35 saves on 37 shots to notch his first career victory at the junior level.
The North Stars (3-1-0) will travel to 1-3 Marquette next Friday before the Sept. 27 home opener at Centre ICE arena the following night against the Rangers.
