Traverse City North Stars News Release
BLAINE, Minn. - The Traverse City North Stars wear red, white and blue - but there was black and gold all over the scoresheet Saturday on the final day of the NAHL Showcase in suburban Minneapolis.
Former Traverse City Central High School stars Jared Van Wormer (Traverse City, MI/TC North Stars NAHL), Kyle Froese (Traverse City, MI/TC Central HS), and Eric Jones (Traverse City, MI/Lansing Capitals U18) scored consecutive goals at Schwan Super Rink, and Kyle Laslo (Fenton, MI/Osoyoos KIJHL) gobbled up all 26 shots he faced, as the North Stars knocked off Springfield by a 4-0 margin.
While most folks were still spoon-deep in their morning corn flakes, Traverse City - which finished the Showcase with a nearly-perfect 3-0-1 mark - controlled play throughout the finale, bagging a pair of goals in the second period and two more in the third to accrue seven of a possible eight points in their Minnesota excusrsion.
After a scoreless first period, the North Stars got things cranked up in the first half of the second. Van Wormer opened the scoring at 6:30 on assists from fellow TC natives Eric Rivard (Traverse City, MI/ TC North Stars NAHL) and Mitchell Snider (Traverse City, MI/TC North Stars NAHL). Jones potted his first junior goal - an unassisted marker - a little more than two minutes later.
Froese registered his own initial junior foray 7:12 into the final stanza, accepting a perfect centering pass from Kyle Loridon (Howell, MI/Lansing Capitals U18) and driving the puck home for a 3-0 advantage. Alec Shields (Pittsburgh, PA/TC North Stars/Mercyhurst College) put a bow on things, sticking home an empty-netter with 2:01 to play. Chris Waterstreet (Northville, MI/TC North Stars NAHL) set up Shields' second score of the young season.
While Shields and Snider (four assists) collected five points each over four Showcase contests, Rivard and Van Wormer added four and three, respectively, to help keep Traverse City near the top of the North Division standings in the early offing. Laslo backstopped the club throughout the event, and sports a 1.68 goals-against average and sterling .940 save percentage.
The North Stars will enjoy a week off before hosting red-hot Port Huron in the home opener on Sept. 28 at Centre ICE Arena.
