Columbus Stars News Release

Chris Taliercio, Paul Dunphy and Ryan Aschaber take diverse roads to Columbus and the United Hockey League

COLUMBUS, OH – Three players with more in common than just a love of the game have signed on with the Columbus Stars for its inaugural UHL season, announced General Manager Robb W. King and Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Malcolm Cameron announced today.

Chris Taliercio is a six-foot, 200-pound forward who played his rookie season as a Louisiana IceGator in the East Coast Hockey League last season. The Farmingdale, NJ native tallied 24 points (10 g –14 a) in 52 games and racked up 48 PIM. Taliercio was a fan favorite in Louisiana and very involved with the team’s outreach programs in the local schools. As a college hockey player at Dartmouth, the forward put up 10 goals and seven assists for a career high his junior year including the game-winner in the ECAC quarterfinals versus Rensselaer. Taliercio played prep school hockey at St. Paul’s School in Concord, NH, where he recorded 49 points (18g, 31a) in 27 games and was the team’s captain. Taliercio was an ISL All-Star and a Hockey Night in Boston All-Scholastic selection.

Paul Dunphy has also had his share of college success, both academic and athletic. The six-foot, 185-pound scorer earned all-Canadian Academic honors at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, NS. Dunphy did not slack on the ice, either. In 2001-02 Dunphy posted 20 points (10 g – 10 a) in 28 games for the X-Men. Cameron is familiar with the Halifax, NS native and coached him is summer hockey schools along Canada’s east coast.

Goaltender Ryan Aschaber took the elite Junior A hockey route to the UHL and the Stars. After being edged out in PeoriaÂ’s (ECHL) camp, the Peterbourough, ON-native returned to the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League and proceeded to play his best hockey to date. He set new career bests in shutouts (4), saves (1,463), goals against average (2.92) and save percentage (.918). Aschaber was also selected as WindsorÂ’s nominee for the Leo Lalonde Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to the overage player of the year as selected by OHL general managers.

“These three guys are all good young players who will bring character and determination to the team with their youthful energy,” said Cameron. “These guys have upward mobility in their hockey careers and it will be exciting for them to continue that in Columbus.”

The three signings makes 16 players on the dotted line for the 2003-04 Columbus Stars. Defensemen Ryan Coole, Derek Ernest, Jasmin Gelinas, Chad McIver and Steve Rodberg join forwards Evan Cheverie, B.J. Kilbourne, Lee Jelenic, Scott Levins, Matt Medvecz, Eric Naud and Matt Noga as Stars. Aschaber joins Greg Hewitt as backstops for the first-year club, which begins the home portion of its UHL schedule at the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum on October 31 at 7 p.m. versus the defending Colonial Cup champion Fort Wayne Komets.

The Columbus Stars Hockey Family includes the professional United Hockey League Stars, the Junior B Central States Hockey League Stars and the various age groups (Mite through Midget) of the Columbus Stars Youth Travel Hockey Program. The Columbus Stars Ice Center, located just off of Schrock Road on the north side of Columbus will provide a unified location for practices and games. The Center is scheduled to open in early October. Director of Hockey Operations/UHL Head Coach Malcolm Cameron will provide a unifying structure with player development and the joy of the game at its core.
