LONGUEUIL, Wednesday November 3rd 2004 (LHJMQ) â Players from the top two teams overall in the Québec Major Junior Hockey League, the Chicoutimi Saguenéens and the Moncton Wildcats, earned the first monthly prizes of the season, on Wednesday.
After a vote taken by the 16 QMJHL coaches, Stanislav Lascek, of the Saguenéens, earned the title of Offensive Player of the Month for the period starting on September 16th and ending on October 31st.
His teammate Marek Zagrapan was named Rookie of the Month while goalie Corey Crawford, of the Wildcats, won the Defensive Player of the Month award.
Lascek, an 18 year-old right winger from Martin, Slovakia, was selected over Sidney Crosby, of the Rimouski Océanic, and Alex Bourret, of the Lewiston MAINEiacs.
In the first six weeks of the regular season, Lascek collected 32 points, including 10 goals in 17 games. He scored five power play goals and registered two winning tallies.
Among rookies, Zagrapan, a 17 year-old centerman from Presov, Czech Republic, was preferred to David Krejci, of the Gatineau Olympiques. Derick Brassard, of the Drummondville Voltigeurs, finished in third place.
Between September 16th and October 31st, Zagrapan totalled eight goals and 16 helpers in 19 games. He concluded that period with a plus/minus rating of 9 and scored four times when his team had the man advantage. He also got two winning goals.
On defense, Crawford bested defenceman Nicolas Marcotte, of the Saguenéens, and goalie Martin Houle, of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.
Through the first six weeks of the regular season, Crawford, a second-round draft pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in June 2003, recorded four shutouts.
In that stretch, Crawford showed an 11-3-1 record in 15 games, along with a 2.08 goals against average and a save percentage of .928.
