Newport Gulls News Release
NEWPORT, R.I.- The Gulls will continue to have Stanford University players make the trip to Newport this summer with the signing of freshman utility player Tim Tawa. Coach David Esquer is in his first year at the helm for the Cardinal after Mark Marquess' retirement following 41 seasons as Head Coach. Many of Coach Marquess' standouts spent their summer in Newport and Tawa will follow suit.
Tawa, a four-time Gatorade Player of the Year for his hometown West Linn High in West Linn, Oregon, won the award just once for baseball and three times for football. Tawa holds state records for career touchdown passes and passing yards as well as passing yards in a season, garnering 2016 Oregonian High School Athlete of the Year honors. In addition to Tawa's post-football season awards, his performance on the baseball field led to the country's highest honor for a high school athlete, 2016-17 MaxPreps Male Athlete of the Year.
Although Tawa has experienced tremendous success on the gridiron he has always felt at home on the baseball diamond. Following his time at West Linn, the six-foot, 180 pounder told the Cardinal Sports Report: "I was always a baseball player in mind before high school football became a big thing. I was offered for baseball before anything happened with football. I feel like baseball is a better fit for me, which is why I like to play it more."
Perfect Game's 135th ranked outfielder in the country followed his high school teammate Will Matthiessen to Stanford and has started every game for Coach Esquer's squad thus far. Tawa's .286 average and 12 hits are currently second best on the team, half of the 12 going for extra bases including a home run in each of Stanford's last two games. The Cardinal are 11- 1 this season and currently rank eighth in the national poll.
Tawa brings a tremendous amount of athleticism to Newport, making him a versatile player for Coach Coombs this season. With such a historic high school career, coupled with his fast start at Stanford, Tawa's arrival to the Gulls comes with much anticipation and excitement.
