Calgary Stampeders News Release
The Calgary Stampeders are proud to introduce The Stan Schwartz Heart of a Champion Award, which will be presented annually to three Calgary high school football seniors who display important life skills such as determination, pride, perseverance, dedication, leadership and integrity through their pursuit of excellence on the field, in the classroom and in the community.
The inaugural Stan Schwartz Heart of a Champion Award winners are Jesse Hiebert from Lord Beaverbrook (Division I), Jeffrey Vela from Cresent Heights (Division II) and Benjamin Bullock from Bishop Carroll (Division III).
The winners will be honoured at halftime of the Stamps' Western Semi-Final clash with the Edmonton Eskimos on Nov. 15.
"The Calgary Stampeders are truly proud to recognize these three students for being hard-working, well-rounded individuals," said Ted Hellard, managing partner, football operations. "Rather than just talking about results and performance on the field, it's also important to acknowledge the work young people are doing in their communities and in their classrooms. That was the impetus of this award.
"It's only fitting that the award be named after Stan Schwartz, who has always exhibited great leadership, pride and dedication as a member of our football club and in our community. He's a great champion, as are these three young men."
The Stampeders, in conjunction with the Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association football program, invited each high-school football team to nominate one player for the award and one winner was named from each of the three divisions.
"We're thrilled that the Calgary Stampeders are so supportive of our kids and came up with this type of award," said Tom Parker, executive director of the CSHSAA. "It is fitting that the award is named after Stan Schwartz, because it isn't about recognizing the best player, it's about having the biggest heart and the most desire. That's Stan in a nutshell. He coached in the Calgary high-school system and is a longtime supporter of amateur football in our city, and we all appreciate his hard work and dedication over the years. This is also just another way in which the Stampeders support our programs and football in Calgary at the grassroots level."
Schwartz is currently the Executive Vice-President, Business Operations/Consultant to the Executive Committee and is in his 22nd year with the Stampeders. He was inducted onto the Calgary Stampeder Football Club's Wall of Fame in 2004 and into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 2005 for his continued support of football in southern Alberta.
