Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Dan Carlson's goal in the sixth round of a shootout lifted the Stampede to a 3-2 home opening victory over the Waterloo Black Hawks Saturday night at the Sioux Falls Arena. The Herd rallied from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to earn their first victory of the season as they improved to 1-1-0 on the season. Todd Skirving and Matt Van Voorhis also scored in the win for the Stampede. Stephon Williams had another strong performance in goal, stopping 37 shots on the night.
The Black Hawks grabbed the game's first goal at 14:42 when Jamie Hill was left all alone in front of the net and one-timed a pass into the back of the net to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead. The Stampede had several chances to score in the period, but couldn't connect as Jay Williams shut the door on the Stampede several times in the period.
Sioux Falls tied the game at 4:25 of the second period when Todd Skirving took a pass in front of the goal from Zach McCarver and put it past the stick side of Williams to tie the game at one. Ryan Keller also earned an assist on the goal. The Black Hawks would bounce back though at 10:49 of the period when Tony Cameranesi scored right off a face-off when the puck deflected off a skate and through the pads of Williams to make it a 2-1 game. The Herd outshot the Hawks 16-11 in the period.
The Stampede got back into the game in the third period, tying the game at 8:45 when Matt Van Voorhis connected on the powerplay. Van Voorhis took a pass from Moore off the face-off and blasted a shot from the left point through traffic and past Williams to bring the 3,400 fans in attendance to their feet. Both teams exchanged scoring chances later in the period, but neither team was able to score and eventually went to overtime.
In the extra session, Waterloo outshot the Herd 7-2, but both Williams' were on top of their game and eventually forced a shootout. The goaltending showcase continued in the shootout as it remained scoreless until round six when Dan Carlson wristed a shot between the circles into the upper right hand corner of the net, just under the crossbar, to lift the Stampede to victory.
The Stampede finished the night 1 for 4 on the powerplay while Waterloo was 0 for 2. Sioux Falls outshot the Hawks 44-39 on the night and earned their first win of the season. The Stampede will continue their five-game homestand next weekend with games against Muskegon and Green Bay at the Sioux Falls Arena. Game times are 7:05 PM each night.
