Sioux Falls Stampede News Release

Memories of an ugly goal-less Friday night seemed to vacate the minds of the Stampede as they defeated the Tri-City Storm 3-2 in front of an announced crowd of 2,784 at the Sioux Falls Arena Saturday evening. Stampede goalie Charlie Lindgren carried the Herd to victory as he stopped 38 of 40 Storm shots in his first career USHL victory.

"He's a world-class goalie," said Stampede head coach Kevin Hartzell, whose team rebounded after a disappointing 5-0 loss the previous evening to the Sioux City Muskateers. "He gave the Sioux Falls fans their first real glimpse of that."

Eric Brenk, Todd Skriving and Dan Carlson provided the scoring for Sioux Falls (4-4-1). Michael Vecchione and Adam Chlapik each scored for the Storm, with goalie Phoenix Copley saved 35 of 38 shots.

Scoring in the first period started at 4:50 when Stampede forward Eric Brenk put a rebound in from the left side after it bounced off the boards behind Copley. Tri-City responded during a power play with 8:41 left when Storm center Adam Chlapik rocketed a one-timer past Charlie Lindgren from the right circle, tying the game 1-1. However, Todd Skirving would make sure the Stampede went into the locker room with the lead when he tipped a wrist shot past Copley at 14:41, making the contest 2-1 in favor of the Herd.

Tri-City tied the game 4:43 into the second period when Storm forward and New Hamphire recruit Michael Vecchione scored the Storm's second powerplay goal of the game. Tri-City would control the first half of the period, but the tide would change with a tripping penalty on Tri-City's Tyler Amburgey, one of two consecutive man advantages for the Herd. Though the Stampede would be unable to capitalize on either penalty, they would get their first quality shots of the period off, and eventually a Dan Carlson chip-in would give Sioux Falls the lead back at 3-2. A Drew Brevig unsportsmanlike penalty with 2:17 left in the period would give the Storm another power play opportunity on the night, but the Herd held off Tri-City for their first penalty kill of the evening.

"The boys in front of me played phenomenally," said Lindgren, adding, "I owed it to them."

Carlson's goal would give the Herd all the offense they would need as Lindgren would be able to stop all 13 Storm shots he faced in the final period. Sioux Falls would get close to adding to their lead with 7:49 left in the period on what replay showed to be a clean goal. However, it was called back when the refs said the puck was "played with hand". The Storm pulled Copley with a little over a minute to go in the game, but they would not be able to get anything past Lindgren who seemed to be on lockdown in the final minutes of the contest.

"Yesterday wasn't our best game," said Lindgren, "but we came out today and played a lot better."

The Sioux Falls Stampede will travel to Lincoln next Friday to face the Stars at 7:05 PM.
