Stampede Sweep Jackets, travel to Chicago this weekend

The Sioux Falls Stampede earned a weekend and season sweep of the Ohio Jr. Blue Jackets with wins Thursday and Friday to improve to 17-13-2 on the year and 7-2-0 since the winter break.

On Thursday, the Stampede got a three point performance (1g, 2a) from Ryan Guentzel and 31 saves from Matt Lundin in a 4-1 win over the Blue Jackets. Erik Peterson added a goal and an assist while Nick Dineen chipped in two assists in the victory.

On Friday, Dineen tallied two goals and Lundin turned aside 27 shots in another 4-1 victory. Lundin has now won six consecutive games in goal, posting a 2.27 GAA and a .923 save percentage in that time. Guentzel and Corey Tropp each added two assists in the win while Drew Fisher had a goal and an assist.

The Stampede went 4-0-0 against Ohio this season, outscoring them 19-3 in the process. They also out shot Ohio 175 to 98 in the series.

This weekend the Stampede will travel to Bensenville, IL to face the Chicago Steel for a weekend series on Friday and Saturday. Game times are 7:35 PM and you can catch both contests live on KELO-AM 1320 or online at keloam.com

"STEAK-OUT FOR NEEDY FAMILIES" THIS TUESDAY

Tomorrow (Tuesday) is the Stampede's annual "Steak-Out For Needy Families" at Steak-Out Charbroiled Delivery on East 10th Street.

Stampede players will be teaming up with the Steak-Out delivery drivers from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM to collect coats, hats, mittens and blankets for those in need during the cold winter months.

Call in an order from Steak Out (332-5211) between 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM and request a Stampede player to visit your house! The first 100 callers who donate a clothing item will not only get a visit from a Stampede player, but, TWO (2) Free Stampede Game Tickets to the Sunday, February 11th (4:05 PM) game versus the Sioux City Musketeers!

All collected coats, hats, mittens and blankets will be given to The Banquet.

VANEK TO PLAY IN NHL YOUNG STARS GAME-

Former Stampede star Thomas Vanek will participate in the NHL Young Stars game Tuesday night in Dallas, Texas. Vanek will represent the Eastern Conference with the likes of Evgeni Malkin (PIT), Phil Kessel (BOS), Patrick Eaves (OTT) and Zach Parise (NJ).

Vanek, in his second season with the Buffalo Sabres, is currently third on the team in scoring with 49 points (24g, 25a) in 49 games. He has already surpassed his point total from last year (48) and is currently third in the NHL in the plus/minus department with a +26. Last year, Vanek finished the year a -11.

The NHL Young Stars game will take place at 6:30 PM (Central) followed by the NHL Skills Challenge and will be broadcast "live" on "Versus." Versus can be found on channel 71 on Midcontinent Cable in Sioux Falls. Live outside Sioux Falls?

Vanek, the Stampede's all-time leading scorer, becomes the first former Herd player to participate in the NHL All-Star Game festivities.

The All-Star Game itself will take place on Wednesday at 7 PM on Versus. It marks the first time the NHL has played it's All-Star Game during the week and is the first All-Star Game since the 2004 season.

VANNELLI, NODL POST BIG WEEKENDS FOR

GOPHERS AND HUSKIES

Former Stampede defenseman Mike Vannelli and forward Andreas Nödl had big weekends for their respective schools.

Vannelli, who also serves as team captain, recorded a "hat trick" to help lead the Gophers to a 5-4 win over Denver Saturday night in Minneapolis. The win allowed the Gophers to split the weekend series after falling 1-0 Friday night. The Gophers are 21-3-3 on the season and the #1 team in the country.

Nödl tore it up against former teammates Andrew Carroll and Drew Akins, recording five points (2g, 3a) in the Huskies weekend sweep of the UMD Bulldogs. Nödl had a goal and an assist in SCSU's 5-0 win Friday and a goal and two assists in their 6-5 wild win on Saturday night. MALL GOLF CONTINUES AT THE EMPIRE MALL-

"Mall Golf" officially kicked off last Friday and will be open every weekend until February 25th.

The cost is just $5 to play all nine holes or you can sample a hole of choice at a cost of $1 per hole. Last year, Mall Golf debuted with over 2,300 guests playing the course and $23,000 in golf game funds raised & distributed to three area charities.
