Stampede Stymie Waterloo in the Third

All five Sioux Falls Stampede goals came in the third period Saturday, erasing a two-goal Waterloo lead and ending the Black Hawks' eight-game winning streak in a 5-2 result that favored the visitors at Young Arena.

The Stampede thought they had their first goal at 3:03 of the third, but Anthony Romano was ruled to have kicked the puck into the net. Instead, Sioux Falls got one that counted nearly six minutes later. During a power play, Artem Ivanyuzhenkov received an errant shot in the right circle and spun the puck toward the net, to be redirected in by Cade Borchardt. Borchardt tipped in another puck played his direction by Ivanyuzhenkov at 15:11, tying the score after a takeaway near the Waterloo blue line.

It was Ivanyuzhenkov who provided the eventual winner, coming up left wing and snapping the puck by Logan Stein on a shot to the wide side at 16:56. Romano and Ryan Sullivan added late empty net goals.

The only special teams sequence in the first period had happened early and resulted in a Hawks goal following a successful Waterloo penalty kill. Matej Blumel was the player who came out of the penalty box, and he cashed in after his time had been served. Dane Montgomery was the puck carrier up left wing. Montgomery's shot created the rebound which Blumel put in at 3:57.

The Hawks scored again on another rebound a little more than three minutes later. In that instance, it was Kyle Haskins shooting and Connor Caponi finishing into an open side.

The Hawks finished the night 0-for-4 on the power play. All of those advantages came in the third period, including an unfruitful five-on-three sequence.

The Black Hawks are off until opening next weekend, which begins with Waterloo's second consecutive Friday visit to Des Moines for a game against the Buccaneers.
