Bloomington Thunder News Release
Sioux Falls, SD - Bloomington saw their three-game win streak come to an end against the Sioux Falls Stampede 3-1 in front of 9,715 at the Denny Sanford Premiere Center Friday night. The Thunder fought back but could not tie the game after an early Stampede lead and running into a hot goaltender. Bloomington falls to 25-23-7 in fifth place in the Eastern Conference while the Stampede move up to 30-20-5 and hold steady in the fourth spot in the Western Conference.
Sioux Falls leading scorer Cooper Marody (University of Michigan) scored his 21st goal of the season at 1:32 of the first period. He found a rebound in the corner and walked it to the left circle before netting the first goal of the game. The Thunder would answer with an energetic performance and ten shots on net. Shane Bednard (Bowling Green State University) and Jeremy Davies (Northeastern University) had the best chance on a drop pass, but the Stampede shut down the play to skate into the intermission with a 1-0 lead.
The second period gave the Thunder their second chance on the power play, but despite chances on goaltender Art Brey (St. Lawrence University) they could not tie the game.
Hayden Lavigne (University of Michigan) made point blank saves throughout the game including multiple shorthanded chances for Sioux Falls in the second. Mikey Eyssimont (St. Cloud State University) would record a goal in the period, tipping the puck on a shot from Chaz Switzer (Miami University) from the point to make it 2-0.
Bloomington took their only penalty of the game in the third and after a solid penalty kill they brought the game within one. Blake Gober received a pass from Shane Bednard (Bowling Green State University) after Van Barr (Western Michigan University) played it down at center. Gober scored his eighth of the season through the five-hole of Brey to make it 2-1.
Coach Williams and the Thunder tried to tie the game in the final minutes of the third with a power play and an extra attacker. After a timeout the Stampede's Logan O'Connor (University of Denver) finished the game with an empty netter in the final minute. Brey finished the game making 27 saves in his second consecutive win.
The Thunder won the shot battle 28-27, but Lavigne suffered only his fourth road loss of the season making 24 saves in the game.
