Sioux Falls Stampede News Release

Fargo, ND-The Sioux Falls Stampede rallied from a 3-0, second period deficit, but allowed two empty net goals in the final minute to fall 5-2 to the Fargo Force Saturday night in Fargo. Mitch Hughes and Joseph Lordo scored for the Herd who got to within a goal, but were unable to find the back of the net in the final period. Charlie Lindgren stopped 27 of 30 shots in goal for the Herd who fell to 12-19-11 on the season and remained in seventh place in the West, one point back of sixth place Sioux City.

The Stampede looked to have more jump in the first period then Wednesday, but the Force grabbed the first goal at 7:57 when David Gust blasted a shot into the back of the net. Gab Gurtler took the puck off the side of the Stampede net and fed Gust inside the right circle who slapped the puck off the left post and into the back of the net. The Force doubled their lead with just over two minutes remaining when an errant Stampede pass was picked up behind the Herd net by Bryn Chyzyk who slipped the puck in the slot to Colton Hargrove who wristed a shot from the left point and past the stick side of Stampede netminder Charlie Lindgren. The Force took their 2-0 lead into the second while outshooting the Herd 9-8.

Fargo extended their lead to three goals 8:12 into the second when Neal Goff's blast from the left point went off a Stampede skate and past the left pad of Lindgren to make it a 3-0 game. The Herd would respond less than a minute later when Mitch Hughes tallied his first goal of the season. Todd Skirving raced in front of the Fargo and the puck bounced in the slot where Hughes picked up the puck and wristed into the back of the net. Four minutes later, the Stampede pulled within a goal when Joseph Lordo tallied his third goal of the season. Zach McCarver made the play happen when he raced down the right wing boards and danced around Fargo netminder Zane Gothberg sending a pass into the crease that was batted out to Lordo who then fired a shot past Gothberg's glove side to make it a 3-2 game. The Herd nearly tied the game moments later on a Ryan Keller shot, but Gothberg held onto the lead for the Force and the game remained 3-2 at the end of the second period, but the Force had 48 seconds of powerplay time to begin the third period.

The Herd killed off the penalty to begin the period, but struggled to put much of an offensive tack together. They were unable to muster just five shots in the period and allowed two empty net goals in the final minute to make the score look worse than it was.

The Herd finished the night 0 for 1 on the powerplay while killing off all three Fargo powerplays. The Stampede return to action this Friday when they travel down I-29 to face Sioux City at 7:05 PM. Fans can watch the game live at both Buffalo Wild Wings in Sioux Falls.
