Stampede Come up Just Short in Lincoln

In an exciting finish, the Sioux Falls Stampede came up just short and fell to the Lincoln Stars, 3-2 Friday night in Lincoln. Trailing by a goal in the final seconds, the Herd flooded the net with pressure, but could not get the puck into across the goal line. Although it looked like the game was over, the referee ruled the puck was played with a hand in the crease with 0.5 seconds remaining and the Stampede were awarded a penalty shot. Todd Skirving tried to go glove side on Stars netminder Jackson Teichroeb, but was denied and the Herd fell 3-2. The loss dropped the Herd to 4-5-1 on the season and kept them winless on the road (0-2-1) this season.

The Stars came out flying in the first period and got on the board 4:30 into the game when Kevin Roy tallied his league leading 11th goal for the Stars. Roy took a pass in the high slot from Brandon Carlson and wristed a shot that beat Stampede netminder Stephon Williams five-hole. The Stars continued to put pressure on the Stampede, but the Herd withstood the challenge and kept the deficit at just one. Sioux Falls broke through at 17:29 when Nick Nielsen tallied his third goal of the season. Nielsen jumped off the Stampede bench and picked up a loose puck, broke down the left wing boards and into the slot where he was slashed, but still managed to backhand the puck past the stick side of Lincoln goaltender Jackson Teichroeb to tie the game at one. Lincoln outshot the Stampede 13-11 in the first period.

The Stampede grabbed their first lead of the game 6:41 into the second period on a powerplay goal by Justin Selman. Selman took a pass from Kyle Rankin inside the right circle and slapped a shot past the stick side of Teichroeb into the lower left corner of the net to give the Herd a 2-1 lead. Joseph Lordo also assisted on the goal for the Stampede. The goal was the first of the season for Selman and broke a 1 for for 12 skid on the powerplay.

Things got chippy and physical as the period went on. The Stampede found themselves two men down at 12:57 when Drew Brevig and Dan Carlson were both called for tripping. That led to a powerplay goal for Lincoln when Teemu Titinen backhanded a loose puck in the crease past Williams at 14:12. Both teams played physical for the remainder of the period, but neither team scored and the game remained tied at two after two periods. The Stampede outshot Lincoln 9-5 in the period.

The Stampede remained tied well into the third period until 5:04 left in regulation when Teemu Titinen tipped in a pass in the crease to give the Stars a 3-2 edge. The Stampede would pull Williams with 1:30 left in the game to try and tie the game and nearly did in the final seconds, but came up just short.

The Stars outshot the Stampede 33 to 28 and finished the night 1 for 2 on the powerplay while the Stampede were 1 for 4. The Stampede host the Tri-City Storm Saturday night at 7:05 PM. Fans who bring in a frozen Turkey to the game will receive two (2) free tickets to the game that night. Fans can also make a $15 donation to the Sioux Falls Food Pantry to receive the free tickets. All proceeds and turkey's will be donated to the Sioux Falls Food Pantry for Thanksgiving.
