Sioux Falls Stampede News Release

Dubuque, IA-If this is how good the Dubuque Fighting Saints look with a depleted lineup, they might be on track for a second straight Clark Cup title. Missing seven players for various reasons, the Saints scored three times in the second period and topped the Stampede 4-0 Friday night at the Mystique Community Ice Arena. Stephon Williams made 28 saves in the loss for the Herd who dropped to 9-13-1 on the season and 3-7-1 on the road. It marked the fourth time this season the Herd have been blanked in a game.

After a slow start to the period, the Stampede began to apply some pressure, but were unable to find the back of the net. The game would remain scoreless until 17:30 when Jono Davis took a pass in the left circle from Eliot Grauer and lifted the puck just under the crossbar to give the Saints a 1-0 lead after one period. Dubuque outshot the Stampede 13-8 in the period.

It remained that way until just over midway through the second period when things got ugly for the Herd. Matthew Caito got things rolling for Dubuque with a powerplay goal at 11:46. Jake Downing followed that with a goal of his own when he wristed a shot past Williams to give the Saints a 3-0 lead at 14:43. Just over a minute later the Saints connected again when T.J. Moor deflected in a shoot from Mike Matheson that snuck through the pads of Williams to give the Saints a commanding 4-0 lead after two periods. Dubuque outshot the Herd 12-11 in the period. Sioux Falls has been outscored 29-13 in the second period this season.

The Stampede came out strong in the third period, but still couldn't find the back of the net. It appeared Austyn Young and Kyle Rankin set up a goal midway through the period, but it was waved off and that would be as close as the Herd would come on the night. Sioux Falls outshot the Saints 11 to 7, but Matt Morris was too tough and shut down the Stampede offense.

Dubuque outshot Sioux Falls 32-30 on the night and went 2 for 3 on the powerplay while the Stampede went 0 for 4. The Herd return to action Saturday night when they host Des Moines for a special New Year's Eve game at 5:05 PM. Fans are encouraged to bring their skates to the game and skate with the players right after the game. Please not e that the arena does not rent skates.
