Saugerties Stallions News Release
SAUGERTIES, N.Y. - Jarrett Brown (Georgia Southern) knocked a bases loaded walk-off single to right centerfield to claim a 2-1 Championship Series-opening win over the Amsterdam Mohawks on Monday night at Cantine Field.
The Stallions now lead the best of three series 1-0.
Stallions starting pitcher Jack Walker (Indiana) shut down a Mohawks scoring threat in the top of the first by striking out Jake Reinisch (Wake Forest).
In the bottom of the first, Josh Stevenson (LSU) recorded a lead off double. He was plated by a Kip Fougerousse RBI sac fly to give the Stallions a 1-0 lead. A pitchers duel ensued, as Walker and Amsterdam starting pitcher Cole Patten (Seton Hill) exchanged stellar innings.
After allowing back to back singles to lead off the top of the fourth, Walker struck out the following three batters to keep the visitors off the board. He faced a similar situation in the fifth, when he struck out Bryce Eblin (Alabama) to end the inning with runners on second and third.
Walker's night came to an end after five innings. The lefty held Amsterdam scoreless and recorded eight strikeouts to one walk and four hits.
Patten shut down the Stallions' offense for the final six innings of his start. He recorded four one-two-three innings.
He was pulled after the seventh inning and finished the night with ten strikeouts, one walk, six hits allowed, and one run.
Amsterdam's lone run came in the top of the seventh. Jarek Woodward (Grand Canyon) loaded the bases with two walks and a hit by pitch. He was replaced by Michael Stanford (UC Irvine), who fanned Eblin. However, the third strike was in the dirt and allowed Davis Meche (Mississippi State) to score. That tied the game at one.
Amsterdam posed a threat in the ninth inning. With runners on first and second, CJ Funk (Pittsburgh) crushed a ball to centerfield and was robbed at the fence by Stevenson.
Cade Verdusco (Grand Canyon) kicked off the ninth by taking a pitch in the back. After two more walks were drawn, Brown served as the hero with his walk-off single to secure a 2-1 win.
Michael Stanford received the win while Conner Brandon picked up the loss.
With the win, Saugerties own a 1-0 series lead. The two teams will play a double header tomorrow at Amsterdam to wrap up the best-of-three series. For more, follow the Stallions on Twitter and Instagram @PGCBLStallions or on Facebook. Visit us online at www.SaugertiesStallions.com.
