Stallions Slay Dragons Behind Marcoccio's Shutout Start

SAUGERTIES, N.Y. - Starting pitcher Dom Marcoccio (Wofford) tossed four shutout innings to set the tone in the Saugerties Stallions' 11-2 win over the Glens Falls Dragons on Saturday night at Cantine Field. The victory pushes Saugerties' winning streak to three games.

Marcoccio retired the first eight batters he faced, striking out three. The Stallions' offense provided early run support, kickstarted by an RBI infield single by Andrew Wilhite (Minnesota) in the bottom of the first inning.

Saugerties added two runs in the bottom of the second. With runners on second and third, Jarrett Brown's (Georgia Southern) erred ground ball plated a run. Two batters later, Tyler Kelder (St. Bonaventure) drew a bases loaded walk to take a 3-0 lead. The run-scoring carried to the third inning, courtesy of a Colin Mackle (Marist) RBI double to up the lead to 4-0.

The fourth proved to be the final inning of the night for Marcoccio, who orchestrated one-two-three innings in all but one of his four frames. He finished the shutout start allowing one hit with three strikeouts and a walk.

The Stallions benefitted from eight walks courtesy of Dragons starter Zach Vavasour (SUNY Oneonta). Vavasour allowed six runs (all earned) and racked up five strikeouts. The righty was pulled after five.

In the fifth, Gene Napolitano (Marist) connected on his first home run of the summer with a two-run blast to right field. The long ball upped the lead to 6-0.

Connor Bruce (Georgia Southern) relieved Marcoccio and picked up the win. He kept Glens Falls off the board until the seventh inning, when Evan Keegan (Castleton) and Reece de Castro (Castleton) drove in back to back runs on a groundout and single respectively. In the bottom of the seventh, Saugerties plated three runs to claim a 9-2 edge.

Kelder scored on a passed ball and Richie Cimpric (Franklin Pierce) scored two on a single.

Austin Cole (St. Rose) pitched a scoreless eighth.

The scoring continued in the bottom of the eight, as Saugerties tacked on two more runs to lead 11-2. Kelder again drew a bases loaded walk coupled by an RBI groundout by Wilhite. Joshua Nam (Columbia) finished off the job with a one-two-three inning in the ninth.

The Stallions are off tomorrow while the Dragons host Amsterdam tomorrow at 7:00 p.m.
