Saugerties Stallions News Release
SAUGERTIES, N.Y. - Starting pitcher Andres Auffant (Franklin Pierce) combined with Connor Bruce (Georgia Southern) to shut out the Amsterdam Mohawks 1-0 win on Wednesday night at Cantine Field.
Auffant retired the side in five of his six innings pitched. He allowed a single to Keith Jones (Washington State) in the first inning before orchestrating five-straight one-two-three frames.
Gunner Gouldsmith (Washington State) kicked off the game with a double, followed by a Fritz Genther (Virginia Tech) walk. Mohawks starting pitcher Shane Harris (Evansville) sat down the next three to keep the game scoreless.
The bottom of the second inning proved to include the only run of the game. Josh Stevenson (LSU) drove an opposite field home run over the left field fence to take a 1-0 lead. It was Stevenson's first home run of the season.
The Stallions were on the brink of insurance runs in the fifth. After a Jarrett Brown (Georgia Southern) single and a Colin Mackle (Marist) walk, Gouldsmith bunted to advance both into scoring position. Genther then lined into a double play to end the inning. The fifth proved to be Harris' final inning, finishing with one run allowed, two hits, four strikeouts, and three walks. He received the loss.
Auffant, who picked up the win, was pulled after finishing his sixth frame. The righty recorded seven strikeouts while allowing two hits and no walks. He allowed two baserunners through six, both singles by Jones.
Connor Bruce (Georgia Southern) relieved Auffant and retired the side in the top of the seventh. Amsterdam put two on in the eighth, courtesy of back to back singles by Matt Shaw (Maryland) and CJ Funk (Pittsburgh). Bruce proceeded to retire the following two batters, including a strikeout, the wrap up the frame.
After the Stallions were blanked in the bottom of the eighth, Bruce sat down the first two batters of the ninth. He hit Stone Miyao (Hawai'i) to put the tying run on base. Bruce secured the three inning save by forcing a Cam Hill (Kentucky) groundout to short-stop.
With the win, Saugerties ups its record to 12-5. Amsterdam drops to 15-4.
The Stallions host Oneonta tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. while the Mohawks host Utica at 6:35 p.m.
