SAUGERTIES, N.Y. - An offensive onslaught led the Saugerties Stallions (10-3) to an 11-4 win over the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs (4-8) on Friday night at Cantine Field.
The Stallions opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with two runs to jump up 2-0. Gene Napolitano (Marist) ripped a single down the right field line that scored Jakob Marquez (Washington State). That was followed up by a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Colin Mackle (Marist), which scored Cade Verdusco (Grand Canyon), who had a single in his first Stallions at bat.
Saugerties' bats remained hot in the bottom of the third, adding seven more runs and chasing Mohawk Valley's starter Joey Silan (Delaware) from the game. Highlights from the inning were a double by Mackle, an RBI single by Tyler Kelder (Florida Atlantic) and another RBI single from Napolitano. Josh Stevenson (LSU) added the ninth run of the night on a single to make it 9-0 Stallions.
Mohawk Valley got one run back in the top of the fourth. Alfredo Delgado (Manhattan) doubled and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Rob Taylor (New Haven) to cut the Stallions lead to 9-1.
In the top of the sixth, Mohawk Valley added another run to make it 9-2. Rob Taylor (New Haven) ripped an RBI double that scored Evan Berta (Fairfield). Stallions' pitcher Connor Bruce (Georgia Southern) then worked out of a bases loaded jam to keep the lead for Saugerties at seven.
The Stallions added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth from a two-run home run from Napolitano to make the score 11-2. Rey Rodriguez (Webber) came in to close it out in the ninth looking to give the Stallions they're tenth win of the season, but not before Cedric Rose (Umass Lowell) hit a two run home run to make it 11-4 Stallions, which was the final score.
Zach Byron (Wofford) earned the win for the Stallions behind strong run support. Byron went four innings, giving up four hits and one earned run, while walking four and striking out one. Silan picked up the loss for Mohawk Valley.
Mohawk Valley returns home tomorrow night for a doubleheader against the Watertown Rapids. Meanwhile, the Stallions remain at Cantine Field to complete its four-game homestand with a matchup against Amsterdam. First pitch is at 7:05 and you can stream it live on Facebook.
