AIFA Columbus Lions

Stage Set for Lions Season Opener

March 13, 2008 - American Indoor Football Association (AIFA)
Columbus Lions News Release

COLUMBUS, GA (Mar. 13, 2008) - On Thursday, the Columbus Lions of the American Indoor Football Association will kickoff their 2008 campaign against the Augusta Colts at the James Brown Arena in Augusta, GA.

This marks the first game for the Lions after making the switch to the AIFA after falling one play short of capturing a championship in the World Indoor Football League last season. The move to the AIFA features a league with 16 teams, a 3-year $2.5 million internet/TV deal established with Simply Me TV.

Joining Columbus in the AIFA happens to be the very team that beat them in the World Indoor Bowl last season, Augusta. "We really don't care who we play, were just ready to get the chance to hit the turf," says Head Coach Jason Gibson. "Were actually glad that we get Augusta first, building rivalries helps spread fan excitement for both teams, we know Augusta is a class act and we expect to have a great battle between two great football teams," continues Gibson.

A couple of newcomers will get their first chance to suit up for the Lions. Local hometown product Anthony Merritt (6'0 210, Wide Receiver, North Alabama) will make his season debut tonight along with Rickie Lewis (6'3 265, Defensive Line, North Carolina A & T) making his first start for the Lions. "We better get a good look at these two guys, because I don't expect to have them that much longer," says Coach Gibson.

Following tonight's game in Augusta, the Lions will make their home debut on March 22nd against the Erie RiverRats. To get your season tickets, call the Lions front office at 706-322-3DEN.
