Lubbock Hawks News Release
Joining Plenette Pierson and Alicia Thompson on the NWBL's Lubbock Hawks is a very familiar face. Stacy Stephens, the former Longhorn that wrecked havoc on the Raiders is now one of the Hub City's own. Coach Sheryl Estes says that Stephens's familiarity with the former Tech players will allow her to blend well with the team. "Lubbock fans will recognize her from playing against Texas," said Coach Estes.
A native of Winnsboro, Texas, Stephens recently received the 2004 Big XII Conference Female Athlete of the year at the 39th annual Dallas All Sports Association Awards Banquet. Upon leaving Texas, Stephens was the Big XII all-time leading rebounder and national player of the year finalist. During her senior year Stacy led the Big XII in field-goal percentage (.607) and ended her final season in the number two spot in the Longhorn rebounding record books, collecting 1,223 boards. Stephens put up 1708 career points at Texas placing her 8th in all-time scoring. She joined the ranks of some great Longhorns, becoming the 3rd player in Texas history to put up 1000-plus points and rebounds. "Stacy adds a very strong presence in the low post and is an outstanding scorer and rebounder," says Coach Estes.
Stacy was a member of the gold medal, 2002 Confederation of Pan American Basketball Association (COPABA) team, coached by Texas Tech's Marsha Sharp in Brazil, and a member of the 2001 USA Basketball Women's Junior World Championship team that claimed the bronze medal in the Czech Republic.
In 2004, Stacy was drafted in the 3rd round of the WNBA by the Houston Comets and later picked up by the Detroit Shock where she spent one season. Coach Estes believes that since Stephens is a Texan, then she will fit great in Lubbock.
Season tickets for the Lubbock Hawks' 2005 inaugural season are currently on sale and can be purchased at the Lubbock Sports Center located at 6024 45th Street or by calling 806-797-2333. All games will be played at the Rip Griffin Center on the campus of Lubbock Christian University. For further information log on to www.nwbl.com.
