Swoopes to Join the Hawks

LUBBOCK, Tex. – Sheryl Swoopes has signed with the NWBL's Lubbock Hawks, effective Monday, Feb. 14, 2005. Currently a player for the WNBA's Houston Comets, Swoopes will be joining the Hawks on Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, for the game in Dallas against the Dallas Fury.

Swoopes, a West Texas native, graduated from Brownfield High School and was named the 1991 Junior College Player of the Year while at South Plains Junior College. Two years later, Swoopes led Texas Tech to a Division I NCAA Championship. She is a 2-time MVP for the WNBA (2000, 2002) and 3-time Defensive Player of the Year (2000, 20002, 2003). Swoopes also received gold medals for the 1994 Goodwill Games, 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games, and the 2002 World Championships.

"We are very excited to be having Sheryl Swoopes come back to Lubbock, Tex. She will add value to an already amazing team," said Ricky Romero, general manager of the Lubbock Hawks.

"Anytime you get a player of that caliber, you are always excited and happy to have someone like that on your team. She'll add a great deal to the team and overall athleticism," said Brent Palmer, head coach of the Lubbock Hawks.

Swoopes will keep jersey number 22, as Kesha Watson has recently decided to pursue other opportunities overseas.

The Lubbock Hawks will play Friday, February 18, 2005 at 7 p.m. against the Birmingham Power at Trinity Christian, 6701 University Avenue. The 2005 schedule can be found on the Web site, http://www.nwbl.com.
