Ohio Valley Greyhounds News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD (June 25, 2002)â The Continental Basketball Association and the Sioux Falls Skyforce announced today that former NBA Champion Stacey King has been named head coach of the organization. King was the head coach of the Rockford Lightning for the last year-and-a-half (2001-02), compiling a 56-41 (.577) regular season record and a 5-4 (.556) record in two straight trips to the CBA playoffs.
"Stacey played for winning teams at Oklahoma in college and with the Chicago Bulls in the NBA," said Skyforce owner Greg Heineman. "He's been a winning coach in Rockford for the past two years, and we look forward to his brand of basketball in Sioux Falls."
Last season, King guided Rockford to a 31-25 regular season record, and an appearance in the CBA Championship game versus the Dakota Wizards. The Lawton, Okla. native enjoyed an eight-year NBA career. Originally drafted by the Chicago Bulls with the sixth overall pick in the 1989 NBA Draft, King was a part of three NBA Championship teams under the leadership of head coach Phil Jackson (1991, 1992, 1993). After four-and-a-half years in Chicago, the 6- foot-11 King was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in Feb. 1994 for Luc Longley, and played a year-and-a-half for the Wolves. He also played for Miami, Boston and Dallas.
"Sioux Falls has always been a special place for me," said King. "I loved playing here, and I always enjoyed coming back to coach here. This is a unique city with great people."
King also played two seasons in the CBA, logging 37 regular season games with Sioux Falls from 1996-98. His Skyforce career averages were 13.8 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. King also appeared in 20 playoff games for Sioux Falls, and recorded 207 rebounds, tying him for the top spot in the Skyforce playoff record book with Monty Buckley. He also spent time with Grand Rapids in 1996-97. King graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Journalism/Public Relations, and led the Sooners to the 1988 NCAA Championship game versus Kansas. He finished his career with 2,008 points and 825 rebounds.
