Duluth-Superior Dukes News Release
Former major leaguer Terry Lee Jones tripled home Chris LePine with two out in the bottom of the 7th inning, breaking a 1-1 deadlock and leading Duluth-Superior to a 3-1 victory over St. Paul Wednesday evening at Wade Stadium. The Dukes added an insurance run in the 8th off of reliever Rodney Dickinson, before Travis Thompson slammed the door on the Saints in the 9th, notching his first save.
Duluth-Superior, 4-1, has won four consecutive games since an opening night loss, while Saint Paul drops to 3-3 with their second straight defeat.
Jake Whitney pitched well in taking the loss, falling to 1-1 despite allowing just 2 runs over 6.2 innings. Offensively, the Saints spread their 7 hits over 6 innings, picking up more than one hit only in the 6th, when Keith Williams singled home Limberth Marin, who reached on a bunt base hit to lead off the frame. The Saints had a runner picked off of first base by Dukes starter Tony Bacci in each of the first 3 innings, and twice hit into double plays, including Keith Williams being thrown out at third by center fielder David Jefferson in the ninth following a fly ball out off the bat of Kevin Roberson, thwarting a Saint Paul rally.
The two clubs meet for the final time of the season at Wade Stadium Thursday afternoon in a matinee scheduled for a 12:05 start. Julio Villalon starts for Duluth-Superior, while former Duke Klae Calvert takes the ball for Saint Paul.
Bacon Bits: - The Saints have not homered in 46 innings.
- Keith Williams has hit safely in 5 consecutive games.
- Neither the Dukes nor the Saints have allowed a home run this season.
- Lake Superior is the largest lake in North America.
