St. Louis Variety, Steamer Soccer Foundation to benefit from "Celebration of Excellence" gala

(St. Louis, Feb. 26, 2004) -- The MISL Commissioner's Celebration of Excellence dinner/auction at the Renaissance St. Louis Airport Hotel Grand Concourse Ballroom to benefit St. Louis Variety – The Children's Charity and the Steamer Soccer Foundation will be held Saturday, Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. The event is part of the 2004 MISL All-Star Weekend, which takes place Feb. 27-29 in the St. Louis region.

"Having an opportunity to work with the Steamers' organization has been a great experience," said Jan Albus, Executive Director of St. Louis Variety. "The Steamers, as well as the MISL are dedicated to helping children with physical and mental disabilities."

The first annual "Celebration of Excellence" gala will feature a reception and silent auction at 6 p.m. followed by the "Commissioner's Dinner" at 7 p.m. MISL Commissioner Steve Ryan will recognize the outstanding contributions St. Louis has made to the sport of soccer and will offer an update on the growth plans of the Major Indoor Soccer League. Dan Flynn, secretary general of the U.S. Soccer Federation, will serve as the keynote speaker, and local soccer authority Bill McDermott will be the night's emcee. Flynn grew up in St. Louis and was a soccer standout at Saint Louis University in the 1970s; McDermott, also a St. Louis native, played on the outstanding SLU men's soccer teams of the late 1960s under legendary coach Harry Keough.

Among the highlights of the evening will be the presentation of the Inaugural "Keough Awards" to Taylor Twellman and Lori Chalupny. Beginning this year, the Keough Awards will be presented each year to the outstanding St. Louis-based male and female professional or college soccer player. The Keough Awards recognize the outstanding contributions made by the Keough family to the sport of soccer on the local, national, and international stage. Harry Keough is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame, and his son, Ty, also excelled on the amateur, collegiate, and professional level.

Twellman, who grew up in St. Louis and attended St. Louis University High School, is one of the rising young stars in the MLS (Major League Soccer) with the New England Revolution. Chalupny, a St. Louis native who attended Nerinx Hall High School, is a standout midfielder for the University of North Carolina and the U.S. Women's National Team.
