
St. Louis Tops Milwaukee, 5-4

ST. LOUIS - The Steamers started the weekend with a 5-4 win Friday night when they defeated the Wave in front of 3,290 fans at U.S. Cellular Arena in Milwaukee.
St. Louis was the first to light the scoreboard when forward Mike Apple buried a restart goal at 12:54 of the first quarter, assisted by midfielder Mariano Bollella. Neither team scored again until the second quarter when a shot from Steamers midfielder Sterling Wescott deflected off the boards and Apple put it in the goal at 4:13 of the second for his 20th goal of the season. Wescott earned the assist on the goal. With no further scoring in the quarter, the first half ended with the Steamers on top, 2-0.
Milwaukee finally got on the board at 3:04 of the third quarter when defender Matt Schmidt scored, assisted by midfielder Angel Rivillo. St. Louis responded quickly when defender D.J. Newsom scored at 4:49, assisted by Randy Soderman. The third quarter expired with St. Louis leading 3-1.
The Wave responded at 2:52 of the fourth quarter when forward Michael King found midfielder Nino Marcantonio open in front of the goal, made the pass, which Marcantonio put past goalkeeper Brett Phillips for the goal. Milwaukee drew even when midfielder Kevin Burk bounced a pass off the boards to Rivillo who was able to score at 5:51 of the fourth. Milwaukee defender Lovelace Ackah fouled St. Louis forward Shaun David, earning a trip to the penalty box and giving St. Louis a man advantage. The Steamers wasted no time utilizing the power play as midfielder Jeff DiMaria scored at 6:11, assisted by forward Joe Reiniger, to regain the lead for St. Louis (4-3). DiMaria scored again at 12:39, assisted by player/coach Daryl Doran, to put the Steamers up by two (5-3). Milwaukee forward Giuliano Olivierio scored at the last second, literally, (14:59), assisted by forward Greg Howes, but it was too little, too late and the Steamers won 5-4.
The Steamers play their second game of the weekend when they journey to Baltimore to face off with the Blast Saturday night at 1st Mariner Arena. The game will be broadcast over KRFT AM-1190 The Zone and will be televised over KPLR-TV, WB-11 at 6:30 p.m.
Following this weekend's games, the Steamers get a break from until Friday, February 18 when they battle the Storm in Chicago at 7:30 p.m. The next Steamers home game will be Saturday, February 19 when they host the Wave at Savvis Center. That contest will honor former stars of the Steamers and Ambush who will play in a reunion game at halftime. The first 5,000 fans in attendance February 19 will receive a special commemorative scarf honoring the 25th anniversary of the start of the original Steamers' franchise (1979).
