ST. LOUIS - For two periods, the Traverse City North Stars hung in with the North American Hockey League's top club. And then there was the third period.

Traverse City twice answered go-ahead goals by the host St. Louis Bandits on Saturday at the Summit Ice Arena, and knotted the contest 2-2 through the second intermission. But the Bandits turned it up a few notches in the third stanza, rattling off four unrequited goals - including the final three in a span of less than four minutes - to claim a 6-2 interdivisional triumph.

Mike Leone opened the first period with a goal for the hosts, while Scooter Vaughn did the same in the second. Stars forward Brett Englebright provided the initial response on a goal set up by Joe Greener and Jameson Raymond, and Aaron Pietila's shorthanded marker in the second (Anthony Schooley) made it 2-2 before the roof caved in on the visitors.

NAHL top gun Pat Maroon was held off the scoresheet, though he did trade fisticuffs with Greener in the third, while the league's top netminder Pat Nagle stopped 19 of the 21 shots he faced and even dished out an assist. Stefan Shively got the nod for Traverse City (17-28-5), making 23 saves in 29 tries. The teams meet again under the Gateway Arch on Sunday, in a contest slated for a 7 p.m. EST face-off.
