Mahoning Valley Phantoms News Release
BOARDMAN, Ohio - The Mahoning Valley Phantoms celebrated Mardi Gras by feasting on the Alpena Ice Diggers.
The Phantoms jumped out to a 4-0 first period lead and didn't let up, trouncing the Ice Diggers 11-1 at the Ice Zone Saturday night.
With the win, the Phantoms extended their winning streak to 10 games and improved their record to 19-0-0 at home.
The 11 goals scored set a new team record, surpassing their previous mark of 10, set on two occasions. Their 10-goal margin of victory also tops the Phantoms old record of nine, set on January 14, 2005 in a 10-1 win over the Springfield Jr. Blues.
Alden Hirschfeld, Chad Boeckman and Nathan Longpre each scored twice for the Phantoms (38-10-1). 16 players recorded at least one point for the Phantoms; another team record.
Goaltender Jon Morrow made 24 saves in his Ice Zone debut for the Phantoms. Alpena's Todd Rudasill spoiled Morrow's bid for a shutout when he scored with 2:21 remaining in the game.
Hirschfeld (8:23), Robert Harrison (14:29), Miles Winter (16:14) and Boeckman (19:48) all scored in the opening period as the Phantoms outshot the Ice Diggers 23-11 after 20 minutes.
From there, the Phantoms added to their lead by scoring five times in the second period.
Derek Graham (3:30), Longpre (shorthanded at 5:35), Dustin Cloutier (7:57), Boeckman (9:32) and Longpre (16:00) made it 9-0 after two stanzas.
When Hirschfeld scored his second goal of the night at 4:12 of the third period, the Phantoms led 10-0, forcing Alpena (30-18-2) to switch goaltenders for the third time.
Just 30 seconds later, the first of six fights broke out. When the last fight occurred at the 12:30 mark of the third period, the Phantoms went back to scoring.
Janis Purins scored his 14th goal of the season and the Phantoms fourth power play goal of the night with 4:47 left for an 11-0 lead.
The Phantoms out-shot Alpena 61-25. With the man advantage, the Phantoms finished 4 for 13 while the Ice Diggers were 0 for 5. Alpena has dropped six consecutive games.
The Phantoms travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to face the U.S. National Team on Tuesday, Feb. 20. Face-off at the Ice Cube is at 7 p.m. and will be webcast on www.mvpphantoms.com.
