Kokomo Jackrabbits News Release

SPRINGFIELD, ILL. - Baldwin-Wallace University's Evan Lovick turned in a sterling starting pitching effort Thursday, June 2, topping the Kokomo Jackrabbits' efforts at Robin Roberts Park.

Lovick went six frames against the host Springfield Sliders, striking out four and issuing only two walks. Springfield managed just a pair of one-run innings in the second and third to hold a 2-0 lead. John Pryor, Jacob Thiessen and Blake Thompson made the advantage stand through seven innings, blanking the visiting team offense on seven hits.

The Jackrabbits offense scratched out single run rallies of their own in the eighth and ninth for a 2-2 tie, as Indiana University - Southeast's Clay Benefield remained hot with an RBI single in the eighth, part of a two-hit night, and a balk plated pinch hitter and DePauw University's Zack Wade in the ninth. Indiana University-South Bend's Trey Bickel nearly kept the contest going another frame, getting two outs after a leadoff Sliders' double in the home half of the 10th before an error plated the winning run in a 3-2 final.

Benefield and Kean University's Chris Amato, starting at shortstop, led the offense with two hits each.

The Jackrabbits (2-5) return to Kokomo Municipal Stadium Friday, June 3, welcoming the Hannibal Cavemen for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. It's the beginning of a three-game home stand, highlighted by Jax's 90s Workout Party promotion.

NOTES: Benefield forged his fifth multiple-hit outing, raising his average to a starters' best .423 ... IU-Southeast hurler Ryne Underwood has been nearly untouchable out of the bullpen for Coach Matt Howard's squad. In three appearances, he's given up just two hits and struck out six as part of a 0.00 earned run average ... Lovick's night saw him lower his ERA to a starters' best 2.45.
