Springfield Sliders News Release

The Springfield Sliders have announced that Pete Romero will return as Field Manager for the 2013 Prospect League season. Romero served as Field Manager for the Sliders in 2012 and was an assistant coach under Danny Cox during the 2011 season in Springfield.

The Sliders got off to a slow start in 2012 under the first year manager, going 4-15, but played .500 ball after that and even managed to make a brief run at the 2nd half title before being thwarted by a surging Terre Haute Rex team.

"Last year with us coming in and purchasing the team so late in the game in terms of preparing for the season, Pete really inherited half of a roster in April and with Opening Day in late May he really worked hard to find players that would be competitive in our league. We are excited to see what Pete can do with a whole off season to work with instead of a few weeks," said Shane Martin, owner of the Sliders.

"First of all, I would like to thank the ownership group for giving me the opportunity to come back and manage the Springfield Sliders another season. I am looking forward to the summer of "˜13 as we have begun to put the roster together in preperation for a run at a Prospect League championship. I am also looking forward to coming back to Springfield to continue working with the people that make the summer season great and memorable," said Romero.

Although the Sliders failed to make the playoffs in 2012 they did manage to light up the scoreboard at Robin Roberts Stadium leading the Western Division by a wide margin in home runs and being near the top of the entire league in several offensive categories.

"Opening Day may be several months away but with the amount of work that goes into putting a roster together that time will fly by and we have confidence that with Pete's experience in the league he will be able to put together a very competitive team for 2013. We saw how hard he worked on a day-to-day basis last year and really appreciated that, " Martin said of Romero.

The Sliders will begin play in late May and expect the 2013 schedule to be released sometime in late November.

The Springfield Sliders are members of the Prospect League, playing at historic Robin Roberts Stadium. The Sliders are members of the Western Division along with the Danville (IL) Dans, DuBois County (IN) Bombers, Hannibal (MO) Cavemen, Quincy (IL) Gems, and Terre Haute (IN) Rex.
