Coastal Bend Aviators News Release

ROBSTOWN, TX – Shreveport sent 13 men to the plate and scored nine times in the 3rd...Vernon Spearman producing a pair of RBI triples in the inning to power the visiting Sports to a 10-6 victory over the Coastal Bend Aviators in the opener of a four-game series at Fairgrounds Field in Robstown, Texas.

A crowd of 2,247 saw the Aviators get on the board with a 1st inning run off Shreveport starting pitcher Josh Gold – with one out, Matt Mann walked, went to second on a base hit by Lou Ferrell, was wild pitched to third and scored on an Eric Battersby ground. Aviators right-hander Kevin Seibert looked sharp in his first two innings of work, but in the 3rd the Sports came out with bats blazing – Jose Gonzalez drew a leadoff walk and scored when Spearman laced a triple to the gap in right field. Spearman then scored on a wild pitch to put Shreveport in front...Keto Anderson then walked and came home on a double to left by Derek Patterson. Bloop singles by Joe Dusan and Derek Henderson produced another run...then Jorge Alvarez dropped a single into short left field to bring home Patterson and make the score 5-1. Rob Elias came in to relieve Seibert, but Henderson scored when Aviators shortstop Dalphie Correa mishandled a grounder off the bat of Michael Hicks. Two batters later Spearman connected again, tripling to dead center to knock in Alvarez and Hicks...then Anderson dumped a base hit down the right field line to plate Spearman and five the Sports a commanding 9-1 lead.

Gold proceeded to set down Coastal Bend batters in a row until J.R. Cortez lined a 7th inning single to left. The Aviators chopped a big hunk off Shreveport's lead in the 8th on Ferrell's RBI single and a three-run homer by Battersby (his fifth big fly of the year)...but with the score now 9-5, Chris Hall connected for a solo home run off reliever Bubba Makowsky in the top of the 9th to push the Sports advantage back to five. Coastal Bend scored a run in the bottom of the 9th – John Ramistella scoring on a base hit by David Bell – but Mann bounced into a double play to end the ballgame and give Shreveport the series-opening victory.

Gold (5-2) allowed just a run on four hits and struck out five in seven innings of work to earn the victory (his second over the Aviators in seven days), while Seibert (1-2) went just two innings in taking the loss. Ferrell and Ramistella combined for half of the eight Aviators hits on the evening, while five different Shreveport posted a multi-hit game (Alvarez collecting three of the Sports 14 hits). Friday's loss – Coastal Bend's fourth straight home defeat – dropped to Aviators to 16-18 on the year, while Shreveport improved to 18-15. Game two of the series is set for Saturday with the Aviators sending lefthander Jonathan Guzman (0-0) to the mound opposing Ian Doiron (3-3) of the Sports.
