Sporting Kansas City Midfielder Benny Feilhaber Voted MLS Player of the Week
September 22, 2015 - Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release
NEW YORK (Tuesday, September 22, 2015) - Sporting Kansas City midfielder Benny Feilhaber was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 29 of the 2015 MLS season.
Feilhaber bolstered his MVP candidacy with a brace in Sporting Kansas City's 3-1 win over FC Dallas on Friday night. It marked the midfielder's second multi-goal effort of the season and brought his goals total to 10, which more than doubles his previous career-high. Friday's win also propelled SKC (44 points) back into Supporters' Shield contention as the club is now just four points behind leaders Vancouver Whitecaps FC (48 points). This marks Feilhaber's first Player of the Week nod of 2015.
Sporting Kansas City and FC Dallas entered the second half knotted in a scoreless draw, but Feilhaber took over in the 65th minute. The U.S. international drew a foul just outside of the box and buried the ensuing free kick with a right-footed blast into the bottom right corner.
Just 11 minutes later, Feilhaber struck again - this time with a penalty kick. Sporting Kansas City was awarded the spot kick after Dom Dwyer drew contact from FC Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez inside the box. Feilhaber converted the penalty, securing both his brace and a crucial win for the home side.
Sporting Kansas City returns to MLS action on Wednesday when it heads to Texas to take on the Houston Dynamo at 8:30 p.m. ET (MLS LIVE).
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
