Saginaw Spirit News Release
The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds ventured to the Dow Event Center for the first time during the first round of the playoff series, recording a 4-0 Game 3 victory over the Saginaw Spirit.
The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds controlled the first period of play, netting two goals and outshooting the Spirit 16-8 within the first 20 minutes. Michael Bunting was the first goal scorer of game three, beating Saginaw's starting goaltender Evan Cormier at the 8:46 mark. Tyler Ganly and Jared McCann assisted the goal that made it a 1-0 Greyhounds lead. It wasn't until the later end of the period when Sault Ste. Marie struck again, this time off the stick of Tyler Ganly who gave the Greyhounds a two-goal advantage at 17:35 of the period. Sergey Tolchinsky and Jared McCann recorded the assists.
The Saginaw Spirit went through two successful penalty kills in the second, holding off the Greyhounds until the later end of the period thanks to some tough defensive play and strong goaltending by Evan Cormier. Sault Ste. Marie's Blake Speers cushioned the Greyhounds lead at 17:32 after he picked up a pass from Michael Bunting and netted a 3-0 lead for the visiting team. Shots on goal in the second period favored Sault Ste. Marie 14-9.
Sault Ste. Marie finished the game off in the third period, netting one more goal before the final buzzer sounded. Nick Ritchie recorded the fourth Sault Ste. Marie goal of the night unassisted at 7:21 of the period, securing a 4-0 win over Saginaw. The Spirit were unable to find the back of the net thanks to a superb goaltending performance by Sault Ste. Marie's Brandon Halverson, who blocked all 24 of Saginaw's shots on goal. The Greyhounds finished their Tuesday night performance with 42 shots on net.
Home game two of the series will go at the Dow Event Center on Thursday, April 2nd at 7:11 p.m. There will be $2 slices of Jet Pizza, Pepsi and beer in the Bud Light Blue Line Club from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tickets at saginawspirit.com.
