LOWELL, MASS. - The game won't count come Monday, but the Lowell Spinners dusted off the cobwebs, shook-off the rust and topped the Nashua Silver Knights of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League by a score of 6-0 in eight * *innings Friday night at LeLacheur Park.

The game was the second annual match-up between the two teams, both operated by the Spinners ownership.

After a 1-2-3 top of the first inning from Simon Mercedes, the Spinners got on the board in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, 18-year-old top prospect Manuel Margot struck a gapper to left-centerfield and turned on the jets, stretching it to a triple. When the throw got past Nashua's Bryan Toland, Margot raced home to give the Spinners an early 1-0 lead.

Lowell would extend the lead in the second inning when 11th round Draft Pick Carlos Asuaje walked to lead-off the inning. He advanced to second on a fielding error and third on wild pitch before scoring on an RBI groundout by Cleuluis Rondon.

The Spinners added another run in the third inning when Margot led off the inning with a walk. After stealing second, he came around to score on an RBI single to center by Kendrick Perkins.

While Nashua was held at bay, the Spinners tacked on three more runs in the sixth, highlighted by a two-run double by Miguel Rodriguez, extending the lead to 6-0.

Offensively, the Spinners had seven hits, with Margot and Asuaje each scoring two runs and Rodriguez adding two RBI.

Mercedes went the first 3.2 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out five. He was followed by Major League veteran Matt Maloney who went 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and striking out four. Matt Spalding, Dylan Chavez and Jack McGeary each pitched a scoreless inning

The Spinners continue pre-season workouts Saturday and Sunday before traveling to Norwich, Conn. for a two-game series with the Connecticut Tigers to start the season. They return to LeLacheur Park Wednesday, June 19 for the home opener against the Tigers at 7:05 p.m.
