Spikes' Waldron Named NYPL Pitcher of the Week

STATE COLLEGE - Major League Baseball Advanced Media announced on Monday that State College Spikes right-hander Tyler Waldron has been named the New York-Penn League's Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 19-25, 2010.

 

Waldron, the fifth-round choice of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2010 MLB Draft, threw 11 shutout innings in two appearances against the Auburn Doubledays to earn the honor, with five coming on June 19 in his first pro victory and six on Saturday to continue the team's franchise record 28-inning scoreless streak. The Oregon State alum now has an ongoing streak of 14 scoreless innings, and is the third Spike to win one of the NYPL's weekly awards in the last three weeks. First baseman Matt Curry was the league's Player of the Week for July 12-18, and right-hander Kevin Decker copped the NYPL Pitcher of the Week award for July 5-11.

 

The Spikes were well represented across the Minor League Baseball Player of the Week awards, as former State College pitcher Phillip Irwin earned the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week award for the West Virginia Power.
