Spikes Surge Late, But Muckdogs Take 6-4 Decision

BATAVIA, NY -- Adalberto Santos collected three hits and the State College Spikes made a late comeback effort, but the Batavia Muckdogs took a 6-4 victory on Sunday evening at Dwyer Stadium.

Santos reached base four times in five plate appearances on the game, and added his 14^th double of the season in the first inning to give State College (32-36) its first opportunity to score. The Spikes got on the scoreboard for the first time in the sixth inning, when Santos scored on Matt Curry's single to right field. Curry then scored himself on Chase Lyles's single to bring State College within 4-2.

After Batavia (40-27) added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings, State College used its last at-bat to mount a final offensive effort. Kelson Brown led off the frame with a single, and Gerlis Rodriguez doubled to bring him in and cut the margin to three. Gift Ngoepe, who entered the game in the eighth inning, then doubled in Rodriguez for an RBI in his only at-bat. Ngoepe then moved up to third with the tying run at the plate, but was stranded there to end the game.

Curry and Brown joined Santos in putting together multi-hit performances for the Spikes, who outhit the Muckdogs, 13-12.

State College also welcomed a pair of pitchers from the Gulf Coast League into the fold on Sunday, a day after that league's regular-season play ended. Joely Rodriguez allowed Batavia's three runs in the fifth inning on four hits and a walk, with all of the runs scoring after the left-hander retired the first two batters. Vince Payne then followed with two one-run innings, yielding one hit and one walk while striking out one.

Zack Dodson (2-5) took the loss for the Spikes after allowing one run on five hits and a walk over his four innings on the mound. Dodson also struck out one batter.

Batavia starter Zach Russell (2-3) went seven innings for the victory, allowing two runs, one earned, on eight hits and a walk. Russell also struck out six in his longest outing of the year. Anthony Ferrara (1) finished off the game's last two innings to pick up the save.

Monday, the Spikes and Muckdogs face each other for the fourth consecutive time in the second game of a three-game set at Dwyer Stadium. State College will send right-hander Brandon Cumpton (0-0) to the mound to face Batavia left-hander John Gast (5-0) in a 7:05 p.m. matchup. Cumpton has not allowed a run in five innings of work with the Spikes, while Gast has earned the win in each of his last four starts.
