State College Spikes News Release
NILES, OH-The State College Spikes scored the first run of the game for the first time this season, but the Mahoning Valley Scrappers came from behind to deal the Spikes their third straight one-run loss, 2-1, on Tuesday night at Eastwood Field.
Pittsburgh Pirates first-round pick Tony Sanchez went 2-for-4 and scored the only run for State College (1-4) in the third inning. Although Sanchez committed an error and a passed ball, the Boston College product also showed off his arm, throwing out a would-be base-stealer in the second inning.
Kyle Morgan went 1-for-4 for the Spikes, and drove in Sanchez with a triple to right field. Morgan's triple was the first by any Spike this season.
In addition to taking the game's initial lead for the first time in 2009, State College also outhit its opponent for the first time this year, notching seven hits to Mahoning Valley's (5-0) five.
The Scrappers scored both of their runs in the seventh off of the Spikes' Marc Baca (0-1) to erase a one-run deficit. Roberto Perez's double was followed by a fielding error by the Spikes' Freicer Pedron that allowed the eventual game-winning run to score.
Baca was charged with only one earned run, and allowed a total of two hits and a walk in two innings of work. The 2009 Pirates draft pick also struck out one in the loss.
State College starter Michael Felix went four scoreless innings while allowing three hits and a walk. Felix also struck out two in his return to the Spikes after pitching for the club in 2007. The right-hander started the year in Advanced-A Lynchburg before joining the Spikes in time for Opening Weekend.
Nick Kirk (1-0) earned the win for Mahoning Valley after three scoreless innings of relief in which he allowed a Sanchez hit and struck out four. Cory Burns (1) earned the save for the Scrappers after striking out the side in a perfect ninth inning.
Wednesday night, the Spikes and Scrappers meet at Eastwood Field to finish off their three-game set with a 7:05 matchup. State College will go with southpaw Tyler Cox (0-1) on the mound, while Mahoning Valley gives the ball to another lefty, Ryan Anthony (0-0).
Fans can catch all of the action on the Spikes Radio Network and flagship station 3WZ starting at 6:50 p.m. with the Spikes GameDay Show live from Eastwood Field.
The Spikes' radio broadcast can also be heard worldwide through the "Listen Live" link on the online home of the Spikes, StateCollegeSpikes.com.
