BATAVIA, NY - The State College Spikes fell just short in the 2008 season finale Saturday night at Dwyer Stadium, losing to the Batavia Muckdogs, 4-1.

The Muckdogs (46-28) jumped on top in the second inning with Edwin Gomez's two-run double to center field.

Clawing back, Adenson Chourio crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Batavia starter Miguel Tapia. The Spikes (18-56) nearly tied the game with Kyle Morgan trying to score from second on a Butch Biela single, but Morgan was thrown out by Frederick Parejo from center field.

The Spikes were never able to gain the lead, with Batavia scoring a run in both the fourth and eighth innings. Mark Carver led the Spikes' offense, going 2-for-4 in the final game of the 2008 season.

Gabriel Alvarado (0-1) was on the hook for the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in 1.1 innings pitched.

After pitching five scoreless innings of relief, Scott Gorgen (5-2) earned the win for the Muckdogs. Adam Reifer earned his 22nd save, pitching the final three outs.

Season tickets for the Spikes' 2009 season are now on sale, including the 2009 New York-Penn League All-Star Game at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The complete 2009 State College Spikes schedule will be relased as it becomes available.
