SPHL concludes pre-season meeting

The Southern Professional Hockey League Pre-Season Meeting was hosted by the expansion Richmond Renegades at the Richmond Coliseum on September 17-18, 2006. Each League team was represented at the meeting by their General Manager and Head Coach as the SPHL prepares to begin its third season of competition.
The morning session began with a discussion of playoff format options and it was determined that the league would continue with the same format used in the 2005-2006 playoffs.
The meeting continued with a presentation by Richard Keast from Sher-Wood Hockey, the League's Official provider of sticks, shafts, blades, and protective equipment. As the morning session closed, the group participated in a conference call with the SPHL Immigration attorneys. Those present were updated on all changes and expected changes in the Immigration laws and the related reporting requirements.
The afternoon began with a presentation by Jim Combs, SPHL Director of Officials and Kevin Collins, a NHL Manager of Officials. They showed two training videos to be used in training SPHL on-ice officials, followed by an open discussion on the way league officials will be trained to call to the hockey standards established with special emphasis on consistency from period to period.
The day continued with a lively discussion of the SPHL Rules & Regulaions as established by the Board of Governors at the Annual Meeting in June. While the SPHL Rules & Regs follow very closely with the NHL Rules the League differs in a few areas, most notably the 3 on 3 five minute overtime played in the SPHL.
The meeting closed with confirmation that at least six of the teams will be broadcasting their games over the Internet and the possibility that the other two will have the necessary components in place as well.
The Leagues Winter Meetings are tentatively scheduled to be held on January 14-15 in the Orlando, FL area.
