Special teams shined for Spartans

Augusta Colts News Release
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Bubba Diggs never really had anything against kickers and definitely loves his special teams after a 49-45 victory over the Columbus Lions Saturday night.
Two "UNOs" by kicker Shan Rowser and kickoffs that resulted in one touchdown and set up a three-yard drive came into play as the Spartans moved into a three-way tie with the previously undefeated Lions and the Osceola Ghostriders for the early World Indoor Football League league.
Last year, Diggs went through a revolving door of kickers, well, four anyway, who were a combined 22 of 48 on PATs and 4-14 on field goals.
"We only had 18 on a roster in that league last year, so spots were valuable," Diggs said. "We have a strong kicking game this year."
Rowser misfired on two PATs Saturdays, but the UNOs denied the Lions' strong kicking game a chance to tie or win with a field goal.
Returns helped the Spartans early, particularly Richard Dykes' 50-yard return in the second quarter that represented Augusta's only points. Columbus was taking advantage of Spartans turnovers during the period to regain the lead, but led by just 28-21 at the half.
Wille Bell had 88 yards on three kickoff returns for Augusta.
NOTES: With three touchdowns, Marvin Stone regained the early scoring lead from Daytona Beach's Cory McKinney; Stone has 9 TD for 54 points, McKinney 7 for 42 ... Four of the six WIFL games have been decided by four points or less and three in the final minute ... Columbus' Mahlon Carey's 50-yard interception return was the longest in the league this year.
