Spartans Sign IFL Veteran Quarterback
January 7, 2010 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
La Crosse Spartans News Release
Head Coach Gilbert Brown and the La Crosse Spartans added an important piece to their roster today with the signing of IFL veteran Quarterback Jimmy Sangster. The 6'5 270 lb. gunslinger played last season for the United Conference Champion River City Rage as a backup to starter Ben Sankey. He made the most of his opportunities behind center when given them, playing in two contests and completing 18 of 36 passes for 197 yards, 3 touchdowns, and adding a score on the ground. "Having a Quarterback with indoor experience is a huge advantage for us heading into 2010," stated Co-Owner and General Manager Chris Kokalis. "Jimmy has all the qualities in terms of talent and attitude that we looked for in the leader of our offense."
Before his professional career, Sangster played collegiately at Division II Central Missouri State for two seasons and at Southwestern Oklahoma State for another two. While at Central Missouri, he threw for nearly 3,000 yards and totaled 21 touchdown passes while completing 60% of his passes. After sitting out the 2005 season, Sangster transferred to Southwestern Oklahoma State where he played for two years accumulating nearly 2,500 yards passing, with 17 touchdown passes, while running for another six. He has since received a lot of attention from NFL scouts.
The Spartans coaches and staff expect big things out of the Quarterback this season, and he expects the same out of the team. "I am excited to be back in the saddle playing again for another year," he stated. "With the team Chris Kokalis and Coach Brown are putting together, I truly believe we have a viable shot at contending for the IFL Championship this year."
Sangster and 44 other players begin training in early February, before opening up the 2010 season on the road against the Wichita Wild on February 27th. In the meantime, the team will host its final open tryout this weekend. The cost is $65 and registration will begin at 6pm in UW-Lacrosse's Mitchell Hall, located at 1725 State Street. The tryout will last from 7-10pm and continue the next day at 10am-1pm. Those interested in trying out should log onto www.lacrossespartans.com or call 608-567-4299.
