Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
(Waldorf, MD.) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (13-20) won the series opener against the Road Warriors (6-28) 4-0, extending their winning streak to three games.
Jon Griffin opened the scoring on a solo homerun in the bottom of the second, coming on the very first pitch of the inning from Felix Baez (3-9). The offense kept rolling with three in the third inning, padding their early lead further.
A strikeout started the frame, before Francisco Rosario singled and stole second to force an error and reach third. Two batters later a walk to Edwin Garcia put runners on the corners with one away in the inning. Garcia promptly stole second, setting up a two-RBI single from Teodoro Martinez that brought both runners home. Martinez moved to second on the throw home, allowing him to score on the following single from Jon Griffin, giving Southern Maryland the 4-0 advantage.
The early run support proved to be plenty for Casey Delgado (5-8) who was dominant on the night. The right-hander worked himself into some trouble in the second inning, allowing three straight hits with one out in the inning. Delgado then picked up a strikeout and a flyout to escape the inning unscathed. The starter went six innings, allowing just six hits over the scoreless outing.
The four-run game went in to the seventh inning, where Tommy Shirley was first on in relief for Southern Maryland. After a popout started the inning, a walk and a single put two on with one away in the inning. After a wild pitch put runners on the corners, the southpaw reliever got a strikeout and a groundout, stranding the pair and maintaining the advantage.
A scoreless eighth ensued, sending things to the ninth and bringing Jason Creasy to the mound for the Blue Crabs. The hard-throwing right-hander walked the first batter of the inning, then hit the second man he faced. A fielder's choice put an out on the board, with a strikeout and flyout following to finish off the 4-0 win for Southern Maryland in the series opener.
The Blue Crabs return to action Friday, August 17th for the second game of the series against the Road Warriors. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. on Friday at Regency Furniture Stadium.
